01 — ABOUT
Alexander Hurezeanu, PhD.
Hello! I’m Dr. Alexander T. Hurezeanu. My research examines cultural production and representation in video games, with a particular focus on how game design and gameplay experiences create opportunities for transcultural aesthetics and transcultural communication in diverse cultural contexts.
For over fifteen years and counting, I’ve had the privilege of working as a college and university educator. Previously, I was a College Professor in the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies at George Brown Polytechnic, where I also served as the English and Communication Faculty Coordinator in the Centre for Arts, Design & Information Technology. I also held positions as an Adjunct Professor in the School of English & Liberal Studies at Seneca Polytechnic and as a Teaching Assistant in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University.

I am the Managing Editor of Loading...: The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association and served as an executive member of the Canadian Game Studies Association. As a game studies scholar, my research interests span critical media studies, communication studies, cultural studies, digital design, and narrative design, with a particular focus on transcultural theory.

Investigating the Hīro:
Transculturalizing Western Fantasies through Japanese Role-Playing Games
I earned my PhD in Communication and Culture from Toronto Metropolitan University in 2026. My doctoral dissertation, “Investigating the Hīro: Transculturalizing Western Fantasies through Japanese Role-Playing Games,” specifically analyzes the highly popular RPG (Role-Playing Game) genre in Japanese and Western cultural contexts in order to further establish and cement the contemporary role that video games play in generating and cultivating cultural knowledge and understanding.
